Carl Beane threw out the opening pitch, figuratively speaking, for the Literacy Network of South Berkshire’s new speaker series, “No Limit to Literacy,” on April 9, 2007, at Lenox High School.
Carl is “The Voice of Fenway Park,” the announcer you hear
over the loudspeakers at every Red Sox home game. He related his experiences as
a 35-year sports radio broadcaster, and spoke of the thrill of being part of
the 2004 World Series Championship team and breaking The Curse of the Bambino.
Carl Beane, “The Voice of Fenway Park,” shows his
2004 World Series Championship ring to Deborah Ferro Burke, past chairwoman
of LitNet’s board of directors.
Rounding out the roster were award-winning Berkshire Eagle
reporter Derek Gentile, author of “The
Complete Boston Red Sox,” and baseball historian Jim Overmyer, who was a
member of the special Baseball Hall of Fame Selection Committee that elected
Effa Manley, Berkshire County’s 19th-century black baseball star
Frank Grant, and 15 other individuals to the Hall of Fame.
