Volunteer tutors are what make Literacy Network of South Berkshire possible. Becoming a volunteer tutor is a wonderful way to give back to the community. Our tutors say the work with their students teaching another to read, get a GED, learn to speak English to improve their lives is one of the most gratifying and fun experiences they've ever had. Each tutor is matched with a student based on location, available times and compatibility. Literacy Network of South Berkshire provides learning materials for tutors to work with their students. Tutors and students meet at libraries, Berkshire Community College in Great Barrington, churches and community centers. Currently there are over 70 students involved with our program. Who can be a tutor? LitNet tutors are working people, professionals, college students, homemakers and retirees. The primary qualifications for tutoring are: attendance at training, patience and a commitment to the student including preparing for tutoring sessions. What is required of tutors? After attending LitNets tutor training there is a time commitment of a minimum of two hours a week of teaching time, and one and a half hours for English as a Second Language student. |
